Choosing My Home Network Backup Solution

I was in the market for a home backup solution/shared network storage. The idea was to get a relatively inexpensive device that would allow me to access my files from my laptop, desktop and perhaps serve up music to a Wireless music streaming device somewhere down the road.

I wanted something that would just plug into my D-Link DI-624 wireless router. In addition I wanted RAID 1 support.

The two most attractive models at my local computer retailer were the D-Link DNS-323and the Mediasonic HUR1-SU2LA.

After a bit of web research I decided to buy the D-Link... but some last second anxiety over the amount of money I'm spending these days caused me to switch my choice to the less expensive Mediasonic.

At the moment I'm regretting my choice since the Mediasonic took me quite a long time to get fitted out with the two required hard drives. Followed by a long setup period. The instructions on the included CD were sparse and poorly translated into english. I have everything setup but the lack of user groups means the most reliable way to connect to the device is to restrict access based on Windows logon. Using a shared logon for several different computers has proven frustrating. The mapped drives I'm setting up seem to get disconnected frequently, for reasons I have yet to determine.

I think I'm going to head back to my local computer shop and try to exchange the Mediasonic for the D-Link, pay the additional price and see if I'm any happier.
